Roots and River Wellness, located in Memphis, TN, is a Black, woman owned, perinatal, community health and full spectrum doula agency that provides evidence based education, motivation, and empowerment to women, birthing people, and their families to ensure a safe, calm, and dignified birthing experience.
We serve the Memphis metropolitan area along with counties in Northeast Arkansas such as Crittenden, Craighead, Greene, St. Francis, Mississippi, Poinsett, Woodruff, and Cross as well as Desoto County, Mississippi.
Our mission is to celebrate the joys of pregnancy, postpartum and parenthood by cultivating a positive birthing experience that’s safe, individualized and culturally congruent to help increase lactation rates, reduce health disparities, morbidities and preventable maternal and infant deaths due to the systemic racism, obstetric violence, biases, drivers of health, generational trauma and weathering especially amongst Black and Brown bodies.
At Roots and River Wellness, we offer full spectrum birth, postpartum and community doula services that also includes unbiased support through labor and birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, IVF/RIVF treatment and the adoption process, surrogacy, as well as family meal preparation, lactation and childbirth education, adult and pediatric CPR and car seat safety classes, newborn basics classes, nutritional counseling, mental health first aid training and perinatal mental health screenings, pregnancy and postnatal fitness, running, prenatal yoga, postnatal yoga, mindfulness, meditation, baby and children’s yoga.
We want to be a part of your pregnancy journey as your doula whether you’re a first time mother, birthing person, pro parent, member of the LGBTQIA+ community; want a hospital birth, home birth or give birth with a midwife at a birthing center.
Our mothers and birthing people are equipped with tools, community resources and the power of self efficacy in which they need to make well informed and confident decisions throughout the perinatal process.

The benefits of having a doula can help reduce a mom, birthing parent, partner and their support person’s anxiety, lower the rate of medical interventions and need for pain medication, reduce the risks of C-sections, have shorter labors, improve baby bonding post birth, and we act as an additional support person on your birthing team.
Moms and birthing parents say by having a knowledgeable and compassionate doula improved their overall childbirth experience because doulas use evidence-based information and advocate for the best care on behalf of their clients.
Doulas are not midwives nor do we deliver and catch babies. We are advocates on your team whom provide emotional, physical and informational support while on your parental journey and we help ensure your voice and plans are heard and understood by your healthcare provider and team.

We offer holistic wraparound doula support, community health, intercontraception care and perinatal services that focuses on the overall well-being of the individual whether it be preconception, birth, VBAC, cesarean, multiples, NICU births, high risk pregnancies, epidurals, lactation support, IVF/RIVF treatments, surrogacy, adoption, loss or future births; Breast feeding, chest feeding, bottle feeding or formula.
It is with great honor that Roots and River Wellness has been designated as an official Perinatal Safe Spot by the National Perinatal Task Force in the state of Tennessee.
This distinction comes with the weighted responsibility that every birthing person, baby and supportive family under our care receives unwavering support and guidance; have a sense of belonging, access to resources, and encourages self efficacy and body autonomy over their birthing experience.

Our commitment to infant safety and mental health is stronger than ever as we are a proud partner, ambassador and advisory board member with Cribs for Kids to prevent Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) through our safe sleep initiative, the National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome to prevent shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma through our Period of PURPLE crying program, as National Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Adult Mental Health First Instructors through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, PSI Perinatal Mental Health Volunteer Support Coordinators for TN through Postpartum Support International, and Adult and Pediatric First Aid/AED CPR Instructors through the American Red Cross. Join us in making a difference by enrolling in our infant safety classes.
